Hōkūle‘a Visit

WCC Welcomed Hōkūle‘a in 2016

Hōkūle‘a and Hikianalia, the Polynesian Voyaging Society's Polynesian voyaging canoes, sailed across Earth’s oceans to join and grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world.

The Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage began in 2013 with a Mālama Hawaiʻi sail around the archipelago, and continued through 2017 when their new generation of navigators took the helm and guided Hōkūle‘a and Hikianalia back to Polynesia after circumnavigating the globe.

The Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage made its way to the East Coast of the United States to Washington, D.C. where they were hosted by WCC in May, 2016.

The Washington Canoe Club, listed on the National Register of Historic Places,  was honored and excited to host the traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa during her historic visit to our Nation’s Capital in the spring of 2016. Founded in 1904, the Washington Canoe Club is steeped in canoe history and rich in canoe racing heritage.

We are humbled that the Polynesian Voyaging Society has chosen Washington Canoe Club to be the anchor site for Hōkūleʻa’s DC visit.                                                                                                                     - Friends of the Washington Canoe Club Board of Directors
