SPRINT CANOE/KAYAK

 

Programs

á       Novice – This program is designed for anyone who is interested in learning how to canoe and kayak. On the water classes begin April 1st and run until October 31st. During the winter months (November 1st until February 28th) novices are welcome to join the rest of the team at the Lab School swimming pool Thursdays at 4 pm, where we swim and play water polo. During the winter months we off dry land training in preparation for canoe/kayak season.

 

á       Intermediate – This program is designed for athletes who already have sprint canoe/kayaking experience. Intermediate athletes practice three times a week. Athletes do not have to participate in all three training sessions of training. Athletes will learn water safety, balance in sprint boats, proper canoe/kayak technique and how to paddle in team boats. In the intermediate program athletes will begin to learn the elements of canoe/kayak training. This program is designed for athletesÕ ages 10-15 years old.

 

á       Elite – This program is designed for athletes who have a goal of competing in the Olympic Games, World Championships, Pan-Americans Games, Pan-American Championships, Junior World Championships, National Trials and/or the National Championships. Practices are offered everyday, twice a day. These athletes are working to improve their strength, endurance and speed.

á      Masters – This program is designed for paddlers of all skill levels who are, generally speaking, 30 years old and over. Masters athletes are committed to training as a team and are, a minimum, committed to competing as part of a WCC Team at the National Championships.

 

 

 

 

á       Summer Camp – This program is designed for kids ages 8-14 who like water and are interested in learning how to canoe/kayak. Summer camp consists of 5 one-week sessions running Monday through Friday 9am to 3pm from July 13 to August 14. Sessions cost is $350 per week and discounts are available when signing up for multiple weeks.

 

á       Training Camp Program - This program is designed mostly for kids ages 11-14 who have previously participated in the summer camp and/or one of the canoe/kayaking programs and are willing to compete at the National Championships in Oak Ridge, TN (August 20-23). We are offering 5 one-week sessions running Monday through Friday 9am to 3pm from July 13 to August 14. The cost is $150 per week and discounts are available when signing up for 3 or more weeks. New athletes, ones who have never paddled before, must sign up for minimum of 3 of the 5 sessions.

 

á       Middle school program - This program is designed for schools groups interested in having a canoe/kayak team. The Washington Canoe Club has all the equipment needed for the program (i.e. kayaks, canoes, paddles, life jackets and safety boats). Teachers are encouraged to become part of the team/assistant coaches. Practices will be held after school and programs will start on April 13th and run through May 16th. On May 16th the Washington Canoe Club will host a canoe/kayak regatta for all the schools who participate in the program. The cost is $15 per session per student. All schools that have an interest in participating in this program should contact our Head Coach.

 

á       Learn to kayak - This program is designed for anyone who is interested in learning how to kayak. Interested people can become a part of the existing Novice Program or they can schedule individual lessons. Beginning athletes will learn water safety and proper canoe/kayaking technique. After few weeks athletes may be upgraded to more advanced training programs.

 

á       Join the sprint team – This program is designed for athletes who do not live in Washington, DC and would like part of the WCC team when attending regattas and camps. Please contact with our Head Coach for more information.

Coaching

Darek Oborski - Head Coach

á    Head CoachDarek Oborski is the head coach at the Washington Canoe Club and runs the day to day practices. He has been coaching at the WCC since April 2007, placing athletes on both the Junior World and Pan-American teams. Previous to this he coached student athletes in Georgia, British Columbia, and Poland. Darek has an M.A. in Physical Education. Darek has also competed in sprint kayaking at the national and international level.
