The Washington Canoe Club (WCC) was founded in 1904 to foster and promote canoe sport activity, particularly Olympic-style canoe and kayak racing, which remains the primary purpose of the Club today. WCC is a not-for-profit organization that is operated and maintained by Club members. Club members are not required to volunteer their time to the Club; however, participation in work parties, Club functions, and related activities is appreciated and encouraged.
WCC is open to the public for sponsored competitions and other events throughout the year; however, general use of the Club is limited to WCC members due to liability constraints. Anyone is welcome to apply for membership—membership applications are available at the Club and nominations for membership can be made throughout the year.
Please address membership questions to Kelly Rhodes, Membership Chair.
MEMBERHIP CATEGORIES
Full Membership
Full membership grants the member access to the Club at all times, a boat storage rack (indoors, as available), a locker, voting privileges in Club elections, and eligibility to hold office on the Board of Governors. Spouse and children under 18 may use the Club as well. Parents are responsible for the supervision of their children at all times.
Aquatics Membership
Aquatics members are paddlers, age 23 and under, who are training and competing with one of the Club racing programs. Based on availability, aquatics members may store a single canoe or kayak at the Club. Aquatics members under the age of 18 are not assigned a locker and may not use the Club unsupervised. Aquatics members 18 and over may be given unsupervised use of the Club for training purposes at the discretion of their coach or the WCC Commodore. They may also have a locker if one is available.
Member-in-Waiting
WCC created the member-in-waiting category for paddlers over the age of 23 who wish to actively train and compete with one of the Club racing programs if there is a waiting list for full membership. People accepted into this category may use the Club facilities and equipment to train and compete, but are not assigned a locker or boat storage. To retain member-in-waiting status, paddlers must compete for WCC in three racing events within each calendar year.
Nonresident Member
Nonresident members have the same privileges as full members but may not reside or have a place of business within fifty (50) miles of Washington, DC.
